From Technology Import to Experience Export: China's Mulch Film Management Practices Take Center Stage in International Collaboration
While farmers in Gansu Province were learning to roll up thickened mulch film and send it to recycling stations, cotton farmers in Uzbekistan's Fergana Valley were learning about this amazing "recyclable plastic sheeting" for the first time through a video translated into the local language. This scene is a microcosm of the global effort to address agricultural plastic pollution and to share knowledge and build capacity. As China accumulates experience in mulch film pollution control, its role is shifting from an early technology learner to a significant contributor of experience within the international collaboration network.
A Shared Challenge Under Global Consensus While agricultural mulch film increases agricultural yields, the "white pollution" caused by its residue has become a transnational environmental problem. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), a large amount of plastic residue remains in agricultural soils globally each year, threatening the long-term foundations of soil health, biodiversity, and food security. Against this backdrop, seeking green alternatives to mulch technologies and establishing effective recycling management systems have become common challenges for the sustainable development of agriculture in all countries.
